Cyanotype Animation Weekend

Discover how to bring the traditionally still cyanotype process to life in this hands-on animation course with experimental photographer Rosie Viilup and illustrator-animator Rob Halhead at Bristol Community Darkrooms.

Cyanotype is one of photography's oldest printing processes, traditionally used to create beautiful blue still images. On this two-day course, you'll learn how to transform video and stop-motion footage into cyanotype animations.

Led by Rosie Viilup and Rob Halhead, you'll create your own short animation from start to finish. Using a smartphone or digital camera, you'll capture footage or stop-motion images, turn them into printable acetate negatives, and make cyanotype prints using LED exposure and contact printing.

On the second day, you'll tone your prints with natural dyes such as green tea, coffee and turmeric, then scan and edit them into a finished digital animation.
